OTA updates hit the Samsung Epic 4G Touch and ZTE Fury

Most Android users know there is nothing better than a nice software update. For some, OTA updates are like Santa coming to your house, but with just one present. Luckily Sprint is rolling out small updates for both the Samsung Epic 4G Touch, and the ZTE Fury.

Starting off with the Epic 4G Touch, the software has been updated to version S:D710.10S.FI27 which carries a few fixes and bug tweaks. There is nothing major, but here is what you should notice:

- Ability to edit internal out of office message on Email

- VPN access over 3G fix

- MMS send/receive over 3G fix

And to tag along, the ZTE Fury is getting some new software also. Upon installation, you will see that it’s version N850V1.0.0B14 in the phone’s settings, and it provides only a few tweaks just like the Epic 4G Touch update. The fixes include:

- Speaker phone improvements

- Battery consumption improvements

- Updated Network Option settings

Both of these updates will be OTA (Over the Air), meaning a notification will pop-up telling you when you can install the newest software. So far we do know that both the phone software updates will be “rolling out in stages”, so it could be a few days before everyone receives the latest version. Hopefully users get it quick, and utilize the improvements they rightly deserve.

Newest CyanogenMod 10 Nightly ROM released, brings Android 4.1.2

Oct 10, 2012   //   by RobertMiller   //   Blog  //  No Comments

Newest CyanogenMod 10 Nightly ROM released, brings Android 4.1.2

For those of you that roll with a custom CyanogenMod 10 (CM10) AOSP ROM, today’s Nightly release (Oct. 10) comes with a slew of merged updates, including bringing your device up to Android 4.1.2. Those fine folks over at CyanogenMod sure do work quickly. If you remember, it was just yesterday that 4.1.2 was released to AOSP and began rolling out to the Nexus 7 via OTA.

Unfortunately we were only hit with the requisite “improves performance and stability and fixes bugs” change log  from Google, and pouring through all that developer jargon in the official commit logs can be daunting in figuring out what has been changed or updated. Additionally, it’s still a little early to gain any takeaways from real-world testing of 4.1.2. However, based on a few lines in the commit logs we can see that one particular bug in 4.1.1 with “failing to connect to WPA enterprise wireless” has been addressed in 4.1.2. There also seems to be a few mentions of the browser, audio, camera, the kernel itself, and a slew of other updates.

If you’re on a recent CM10 release (within the past week), you can grab today’s release containing 4.1.2 from right there within your ROM by navigating to the CM Updater (Settings > About Phone > CyanogenMod updates). Otherwise you can grab it from your favorite source. If you’re new to the CM10 custom ROM scene and like what you hear, you can navigate to their site to read up on their AOSP custom ROMs for a multitude of devices.

CM Updater Officially Official With CM10 On Deck To Take Advantage Of Feature First

Well, that was quick. After the CyanogenMod team announced they would be bringing a new OTA update solution to CM users “soon”, we didn’t think “soon” would be a matter of days. That’s exactly what has happened as the CM Updater has officially gone live for CM10. In case you’ve forgotten, this new updater will periodically check for updates and if an update is available, install it as needed.

This new feature is available now for those with the latest CM10 nightlies, so if you’re on that build, head on over to Settings > About Phone to configure you’re own settings and preferences. Now that this achievement is done, let’s keep our fingers crossed that we see something like this soon for those of us with earlier builds of CM ROMs.

CyanogenMod Working On OTA Update Solution, Plans On Dropping ROM Manager In The Process

CyanogenMod Working On OTA Update Solution, Plans On Dropping ROM Manager In The Process

CyanogenMod is about to become a little bit better for all by bringing its own OTA update system to the masses. Many of you are scratching your heads and wondering what this means, right? Well if you’re a CM ROM user, you’re well-aware that in order to grab an update, you would traditionally use ROM Manager which allows users to quickly and efficiently pull updates manually to their ROMs. The only catch with ROM Manager is that it’s not open-source, unlike the CM ROM itself. So the CM team decided enough is enough and developed its own open-source updating method within its own builds.

The newly developed OTA update solution works in a simple way too. While it won’t include push notifications (that feature requires Google Apps framework), the updater will automatically check for updates at user-defined intervals and pull the update once something is available, pulling its info from get.cm. The awesome thing is the updater will allow users to pull updates whether they’re the official, alpha or nightlies builds.

At this stage, we only know it’s currently being worked on and will be on its way soon— though when soon exactly is is anyone’s guess.

Sony to rollout Ice Cream Sandwich for Xperia Go, Xperia U and Xperia Sola

Sony to rollout Ice Cream Sandwich for Xperia Go, Xperia U and Xperia Sola

Sony announced plans to rollout an over-the-air (OTA) update over the next few days for three devices to bring them up to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The devices include the Sony Xperia Go, Xperia U and Xperia Sola. This latest round of updates continues a trend of Sony’s to provide ICS to many of their devices, even older ones.

Along with the ICS update, the OTA will include some Sony specific additions like enhanced media, a better lock screen, and “extended standby mode” to help improve battery life for the devices. The Xperia Sola also gets “Glove Mode” which will let users operate the device while wearing gloves.

The OTA was scheduled to start rolling out today with unlocked devices first up to receive the improvements. Carrier-branded devices will take a little longer although Sony anticipates the updates to well underway by the middle of next week. Owners of the Sony devices can check the Sony update site at http://www.sonymobile.com/us/software/ for more information.

Android 4.0.4 for the T-Mobile HTC One S is rolling out!

Android 4.0.4 for the T Mobile HTC One S is rolling out!

The long-awaited update for the T-Mobile HTC One S is finally rolling out to users nationwide. Of course, the software upgrade consists of the infamous “Android 4.0.4″ alongside its companion, 4.1 Sense. There is no doubt that the One S is one of HTC’s most popular devices, leaving users very anxious for some perfomance fixes and bug tweaks. And that is exactly what the update brought! You can now expect “more smooth” transitions with performance improvements, as well as wireless tweaks, involving Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

Connectivity issues with wireless devices and networks have been a huge problem with the orginal build for the HTC One S, but we are happy to say, those are gone. Even though that the update isn’t 4.1 JellyBean, the OTA fix will help a lot of users in their daily tasks. All in all, the update will round up at about 150mb, so if you are locked into a “tiered” data plan, we recommend that you utilize your home wireless connection.

What do you think of the update? If you already installed it, are you noticing improvements? I would love to hear your comments, and… Happy Updating!

ASUS Transformer Prime receives Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update in Sweden

ASUS Transformer Prime receives Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update in Sweden

ASUS has officially announced the impending rollout of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean to Transformer Prime owners in Sweden. Users should begin seeing an OTA update sometime today. As always, if the update doesn’t automatically show up, you can head into settings -> about device -> software update to pull the firmware directly from ASUS’ servers.

The company is also insistent to remind everybody that along with the update, users will lose official Adobe flash support and Wifi-Direct. Because of this, ASUS isn’t forcing Prime owners to accept or install the update. While there haven’t been any further announcements made pertaining to rollouts in other countries, users can take this news as a good sign. In fact, rumors suggest that if the update goes smoothly, other markets could expect to see Android 4.1 as early as October.

Samsung confirms Galaxy S III Jelly Bean update arriving in October

Samsung confirms Galaxy S III Jelly Bean update arriving in October

Samsung hasn’t offered the most timely updates in the past, with some customers still waiting for Android 4.0 to hit their Galaxy S II handsets. This can’t be blamed entirely on ole’ Sammy, though, as carriers tend to be the ones who delay updates. However, in the spirit of keeping its customers happy, the Korean manufacturer announced today that “the Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) operating system will be available on the Galaxy S3 from October.”

Considering the news comes directly from Samsung, it’s most likely that the update will roll out to international handsets first. As always, individual carriers will have to approve the update before it is allowed to be sent out OTA. There’s no word on the exact day in October the update will be available, though that’s probably for the best seeing as Samsung has struggled to meet its deadlines more often than not.

This news comes after EE (Everything Everywhere) revealed that it would be bringing the Galaxy S III to its new 4G network. EE’s version of the device will come pre-loaded with Jelly Bean, so users won’t have to worry about waiting for a pesky update.
