Motorola Atrix 2 gets a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich

Motorola Atrix 2 owners are rejoicing today because AT&T started rolling out the Ice Cream Sandwich update. We were expecting this but there is no doubt Atrix 2 owners will be happy to ditch Gingerbread. This update brings ICS favorites like Face Unlock, swipe away notifications and tabbed browsing. The update also brings Motorola’s quick-launch lock screen which allows users to unlock their phone directly to the camera, phone dialer, text messaging or home screen. It is still unlikely that the Motorola Atrix 4G will get ICS despite the protests, but at least Motorola is making a step in the right direction with other phones.

Developer starts ‘Update My Moto!’ campaign in effort to obtain Tegra 2 ICS drivers for Atrix 4G and Photon 4G

Just last week Motorola announced that it would not be upgrading its Atrix 4G and Photon 4G handsets to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, despite earlier promises to do so. A frustrated developer by the name of Julian Fernandes has taken it upon himself to bring fully functioning builds of ICS or Jelly Bean to owners who have been left out in the cold. The Update My Moto campaign has been initiated in hopes that Motorola will release a leak of what has already been completed, or at least a supported Tegra 2 kernel for Android 4.0, so that devs can put together feature filled custom ROMs for the disheartened community.

“In 2012 Motorola announced an upgrade to our devices, Atrix and Photon, to Ice Cream Sandwich. Now they have changed their stance, leaving us with an outdated version of Android.

With this campaign, we are asking for a leak of what was been done already or a compatible Tegra 2 kernel for Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean. With these files, we can develop a working version ourselves.

Walkman Player from some Sony devices now for rooted ICS devices

Individuals of a certain age may remember a time when a Sony Walkman was the technological, gee-whiz gadget of its time that set the standard for other portable music players. While much has changed over the years, the spirit of the Sony Walkman lives on today in the Sony Walkman Player app. Like other manufacturer specific apps included on Android devices in an effort to differentiate themselves, the Walkman Player is limited to Sony devices like the Sony Xperia S, Xperia T, and Xperia V devices. That situation has changed thanks to XDA forum member Rizal Lovins.

Using a copy of the app he extracted from his own Xperia S, Rizal Lovins has figured out how to get the app to install and run other Ice Cream Sandwich devices that have been rooted. Some quirks are still being worked out, but for the most part users can enjoy the visualizations, equalizers, animations, and other features of the music player app.

Motorola to soon push ICS update to DROID XYBOARD 8.2 LTE

Just about anybody that has had a Motorola Android device will say that updates get delayed quite often. Look at the DROID RAZR for example. The infamous 4.0 ICS update was pushed back for months, leaving consumers anxious to receive some “tender, love, and care.”

Owners of the XYBOARD devices haven’t see too many updates besides 4.0 for Wi-Fi-only models. With a recent .PDF file showing up on the Verizon Wireless website, it looks like the DROID XYBOARD 8.2 (LTE Edition) will be getting some sweet Ice Cream Sandwich.

On the document, Big Red has decided to include a quick walthrough guide upon updating your device, as well as provide what is included with the latest 4.0.4 software. Here are some of the benefits that will be coming to a DROID XYBOARD 8.2 LTE near you:

• Includes the latest Motorola USB driver to allow XYBOARD to connect to a computer to transfer files. 
• Securely refresh your Corporate Email account with the native email client.
• Faster Browsing Experience
• Improved network connectivity

There is no “set” roll-out date for 4.0.4, but depending on Motorola it can either be days, or months. Hopefully in a couple days time, Ice Cream Sandwich will unite with all Xyboard devices.

Additional Atrix 2 ICS details get leaked, version numbers revealed

If you remember, a couple of days ago we told you about the soak test Motorola initiated for the Atrix 2. While most initially thought the test was an incremental update to Gingerbread, it was in fact the long-awaited update to 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Today we’re getting a look at exactly what that update entails via a screenshot from the “About Phone” option. The screenshot reveals the all-important version numbers embedded in the update. This is most likely the final step in Motorola’s beta testing before officially rolling it out. It’s obviously still very early in this final testing, but hopefully things will go well and sweet ICS goodness for Atrix 2 owners rolls out to the masses sooner rather than later.
