Beautiful widgets has just gotten updated to version 5.1 and gives it even more options and flexibility for users—making the awesome app even better than ever. In addition to having a few new widgets available (such as Barebone for tablets), the developer has finally removed the geolocation option in the widget— finally allowing users to manually enter their desired home location manually. Another noteworthy feature is the inclusion of the Lifestyles widget which in conjunction with AccuWeather, helps users to show different ratings in order to help you plan those fun outdoor activities like going out for a run or finally having that long overdue cookout.

There are more neat improvements and new additions to the app, but you’ll need to hit past the break to get an idea of what each are and grab the updated app from the Play Store as well.

Best Android weather widgets for decorating your home screen

Disclaimer: There are tons of great weather apps in the Google Play store and tastes may vary depending on what you’re looking to get out of your weather widget. I’m basing my criteria for a good weather widget on design, customization options, app responsiveness, and accuracy of weather information. So based on those criteria, you’ll find some of my favorite weather widgets listed below.

The Best

Eye In Sky: By far the best weather widget (and app for that matter) that I’ve found for Android is Eye In Sky by developer Tim Clark. The app has fully adopted Android’s new design philosophy and it is absolutely beautiful. Everything is clean, simple and elegant and the user interface is easy and intuitive. It looks as if it was designed by the Android team itself and should come stock in Android 4.1. The app is extremely responsive and allows you to swipe between different panels  to see weather forecasts for today, the next 48 hours and the next 15 days. Inside the app you can choose which icons to use (it comes with twelve of the most popular weather icon sets, ranging from realistic to minimalistic). There is also the option to keep the current temperature in your notification bar. The notification temperature icon uses Android’s Roboto font and iconic blue color, so it really looks like it’s part of the Andriod system and not some ugly add-on. As far as widgets go, you will find four widget sizes: 4×2, 4×1, 1×1 square, and 1×1 round. Each widget is fully customizatible, giving you the ability to change the background color, text color, icon set, and even how the information is displayed (ie: Fahrenheit or Celsius, MPH or KMPH). You can also opt for rounded or squared corners and even add a refresh button to your widgets. The 4×2 widget allows you to scroll through weather forecasts for multiple cities, so you can check the weather around the world all from the comfort of your home screen. The app comes with three widget sizes: 4×2, 4×1, and a 2×2 circular widget. You can customize the opacity of the background, but that’s about it. All in all, 1Weather is a great weather and widget combo and you can grab it in the Google Play store for FREE (ad-supported).

Go Weather EX:   The Go team is known for making beautiful, high qaulity apps that are available completely free of charge. This is an update to their highly popular Go Weather App (which also has several widgets, but is no longer supported), and brings a completely new design to the mix. Some people have expressed a distaste for the more “cartoony” look, but I personally think it looks great. There are three widget sizes: 4×2, 4×1, and 1×1, and the 4×2 widget has some nice animations on the clock. Weather information is pretty accurate and when you open the app you will find more weather related details. Go Weather EX is available in the Google Play store for FREE.

In the screen shot below you’ll find a 4×2 and 4×1 weather widget, but they offer so many sizes. When you click the weather widgets it opens a five-day weather forecast window that has some nice animations (like the ones found in HTC’s Sense long ago). There are many different skins that can be downloaded for your weather widgets, and while many of them are ugly and gaudy, some of them can look pretty classy. You’ll have to do some digging to find them though. You can check out Beautiful Widgets for $2.49 on Google Play.

Be Weather:  Be Weather is a little bit newer to the game but has grown rapidly in popularity and installs. The app features a clean look, accurate weather information, and several customizable widgets. Widget sizes include 4×2, 4×1, 2×1, and 1×1. Be Weather is available in Google Play in both FREE and PAID versions. The Pro version is currently on sale for $1.99 and removes those pesky ads.

Weather+ :  I have not personally used Weather+, but it is getting great reviews from big news sources like the New York Times and others. The widgets in the screen shots look really nice and the price is fair, coming in at a low $0.99 in the Google Play store. It looks like it would be a good fit for tablets.

HD Widgets:  I would be remiss not to include the ever-popular HD Widgets in this list. The app has so many widgets and customization options that you could spend days playing around with the look and feel of your widgets. This app, like Weather+, has received some great ratings from big name news sources and the 4.4 rating score in Google Play speaks of many highly satisfied customers. If you’ve got $1.99 and want lots of customization options for a good weather widget (among many other things) then HD Widgets is a good way to go. Check it out in the Google Play Store.

One More Just For Fun

Optimistic Weather:  Finally, here’s one more just for fun. Optimistic Weather isn’t your typical weather app (in fact, it doesn’t even have a widget), but it was so original and lighthearted that I had to include it. It takes a more optimistic approach to weather. It will give you an accurate weather report of today, but will always tell you that tomorrow will be sunny and beautiful. Obviously, this isn’t the app you want if you’re looking for accurate weather forecasts, but the approach, the idea, and the animations are so fun and out there, that I thought you might enjoy checking it out for yourself. The app is FREE in Google Play, but you’ll need to download Adobe Air as well to watch the app’s funny characters do their thing.

I’m basing my criteria for a good weather widget on design, customization options, app responsiveness, and accuracy of weather information. Eye In Sky: By far the best weather widget (and app for that matter) that I’ve found for Android is Eye In Sky by developer Tim Clark. The app has fully adopted Android’s new design philosophy and it is absolutely beautiful. Everything is clean, simple and elegant and the user interface is easy and intuitive. It looks as if it was designed by the Android team itself and should come stock in Android 4.1. The app is extremely responsive and allows you to swipe between different panels  to see weather forecasts for today, the next 48 hours and the next 15 days. Inside the app you can choose which icons to use (it comes with twelve of the most popular weather icon sets, ranging from realistic to minimalistic). There is also the option to keep the current temperature in your notification bar. The notification temperature icon uses Android’s Roboto font and iconic blue color, so it really looks like it’s part of the Andriod system and not some ugly add-on. As far as widgets go, you will find four widget sizes: 4×2, 4×1, 1×1 square, and 1×1 round. Each widget is fully customizatible, giving you the ability to change the background color, text color, icon set, and even how the information is displayed (ie: Fahrenheit or Celsius, MPH or KMPH). You can also opt for rounded or squared corners and even add a refresh button to your widgets. The 4×2 widget allows you to scroll through weather forecasts for multiple cities, so you can check the weather around the world all from the comfort of your home screen. The app comes with three widget sizes: 4×2, 4×1, and a 2×2 circular widget. You can customize the opacity of the background, but that’s about it. All in all, 1Weather is a great weather and widget combo and you can grab it in the Google Play store for FREE (ad-supported).

Go Weather EX:   The Go team is known for making beautiful, high qaulity apps that are available completely free of charge. This is an update to their highly popular Go Weather App (which also has several widgets, but is no longer supported), and brings a completely new design to the mix. Some people have expressed a distaste for the more “cartoony” look, but I personally think it looks great. There are three widget sizes: 4×2, 4×1, and 1×1, and the 4×2 widget has some nice animations on the clock. Weather information is pretty accurate and when you open the app you will find more weather related details. Go Weather EX is available in the Google Play store for FREE.

Beautiful Widgets:  Next up is Beautiful Widgets. Beautiful Widgets has been around for a long time and is a crowd favorite among hardcore Android fans. It is more than just a weather widget, as it comes with all sorts of toggles, clocks, and battery indicators. It also does a good job displaying weather. In the screen shot below you’ll find a 4×2 and 4×1 weather widget, but they offer so many sizes. When you click the weather widgets it opens a five-day weather forecast window that has some nice animations (like the ones found in HTC’s Sense long ago). There are many different skins that can be downloaded for your weather widgets, and while many of them are ugly and gaudy, some of them can look pretty classy. You’ll have to do some digging to find them though. You can check out Beautiful Widgets for $2.49 on Google Play.

Be Weather:  Be Weather is a little bit newer to the game but has grown rapidly in popularity and installs. The app features a clean look, accurate weather information, and several customizable widgets. Widget sizes include 4×2, 4×1, 2×1, and 1×1. Be Weather is available in Google Play in both FREE and PAID versions. The Pro version is currently on sale for $1.99 and removes those pesky ads.

Weather+ :  I have not personally used Weather+, but it is getting great reviews from big news sources like the New York Times and others. The widgets in the screen shots look really nice and the price is fair, coming in at a low $0.99 in the Google Play store. It looks like it would be a good fit for tablets.

HD Widgets:  I would be remiss not to include the ever-popular HD Widgets in this list. The app has so many widgets and customization options that you could spend days playing around with the look and feel of your widgets.
